A Road Map for a
Better City and District
The New Orleans City Council is the legislative body for the city, responsible for passing laws, overseeing the mayor’s administration, and representing the city’s residents in various matters of governance.
The main duties include enacting laws (ordinances), approving the city’s budget, confirming mayoral appointments, and addressing constituent concerns. The Council also oversees zoning, land use, and city development projects.
District D covers parts of central, eastern, and southern New Orleans, including neighborhoods such as the Lower Ninth Ward, Gentilly, and part of New Orleans East. It’s a diverse district with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
The New Orleans City Council is made up of seven members. These include one at-large council member and six district representatives, each representing a specific area of the city.
The City Council makes decisions through a combination of public hearings, committee meetings, and voting on proposed ordinances and resolutions. Council members review issues, hear public testimony, and debate before making decisions that affect city policies and residents.
District D faces challenges like improving infrastructure, addressing economic disparities, and enhancing public safety. Ongoing initiatives aim to revitalize neighborhoods, improve public transportation, and foster community development to tackle these issues.
